Happy Monday, job seekers and EdTech enthusiasts!
Back in the Spring, our co-founder, Everett Reiss, was interviewed by Michelle Caffrey of EdWeek Market Brief about Where EdTech Hiring is Now, and Where It’s Headed. There are few key points from the interview (plus some updates since then) that we thought are important to bring into the mix as you’re assessing different EdTech opportunities, companies, and the sector as a whole:
Understand the current market conditions: we have been seeing EdTech companies slowing down their hiring rates and acting with more caution due to the end of federal stimulus funding, and lower VC funding in the space. Check out TechCrunch’s recent EdTech market analysis here.
Adjust your salary expectations: EdTech companies, particularly small to midsize ventures, may not match the high salaries typical of larger tech firms. When reaching out to folks impacted by the “Big Tech” layoffs on behalf of our EdTech clients, we’ve been seeing a significant mismatch in salary expectations.
Be prepared for a different work environment: If you come from a large tech company, be ready to adapt to smaller teams and fewer resources within EdTech ventures.
Leverage networking: Attend industry events, meet people, and establish long-term relationships. These can lead to potential job opportunities in the future. Next up on our calendar is EdTech Week in NYC at the beginning of October. Go, if you can swing it!
Initiate 'soft conversations': When not actively job searching, have informal discussions with recruiters or employees of companies that interest you. This can provide insight and create connections.
Customize your resume: Ensure your CV clearly and directly reflects the metrics, results, and anecdotes relevant to the role and the company to which you're applying. Be ready to "connect the dots" for potential employers.
