Happy Monday! 🌟 This week, on JOTW it’s good news / bad news / meh news in EdTech!
Good news:
Project Tomorrow published a Qualcomm-funded case study showing the positive impact LAUSD-provided devices and connectivity has had on K-12 students and their families.
EdTech firm Chegg rallied and exceeded analysts’ average expectations to ease fears about ChatGPT’s impact on their business. Considerably better news from how they finished Q1!
According Credence Research, Inc. the EdTech market is expected to be worth USD 300.67 billion by 2030, up from USD 120.9 billion in 2022. “How valid are these numbers,” one may ask. “What are they based on?” Let’s not dig to deep and risk knocking this out of the “good news” category ;-)
Bad news:
Crunchbase asks if this year is a gap year for EdTech as funding has plummeted, showing that this February 2023 headline has not aged well in Entrepreneur magazine!
Faculty are experiencing EdTech burnout and fatigue according to this wgu labs survey. Dr. Betheny Gross writes what to do about it in University Business.
Meh news:
Maybe beleaguered Indian EdTech firm Byju is getting its house in order. One person on an investor call said that it “was a very reassuring call,” and that this will be a “defining quarter” for the company. We shall see what “defining” means!
Esteban Sosnik of Reach Capital shared his insights about the rise of vertical-focused EdTech firms, while urging caution in citing how 300 million jobs will be impacted by generative AI. Note: the language Goldman Sachs study he cites concludes, “that the ultimate boost to labor productivity is uncertain, but in most scenarios would remain economically significant.” Now if that isn’t bull-earish language, I don’t know what is!
