$900K Netflix jobs catch Rob Delaney's ire + AI/ML jobs in education
Happy Monday! 🌟 This week, on JOTW, let’s take a look at the whole controversy surrounding Netflix offering up to $900K on some of their AI/ML openings.
Comedian, Catastrophe-star, and Black-mirror actor; Rob Delaney called Netflix “ghoulish” for offering “$900K per soldier to their godless AI army.” One wonders if they could have avoided catching flack from Mr. Delaney if they just made their annual comp range $300K to $699K, just below the $700K per year that Mr. Delaney apparently makes.
I think the broad comp ranges Netflix is posting is also causing some confusion. For instance, in this Engineering Manager (EM) example, the range is $180K to $900K. Why post such ridiculously large ranges? Probably partially because of California's pay transparency law that compels an employer to disclose salary ranges in job postings. Also, Netflix describes these ranges as a "market range," which is "based on total compensation (vs. only base salary)." So it really isn’t clear how much is base pay vs. bonus vs. stock. However, when looking at Glassdoor (which is all self-reported) the total pay breakdown is:
What’s not mentioned is the .006% Premium Netflix subscription benefit ;-) But you better not share your password!
Using the above proportions, my “back of the napkin” $900K pay package breakdown is as follows:
NOTE: Upon further investigation, Netflix no longer offers employees free Netflix subscriptions.
I think a less confusing approach might be for them to break up these postings into different levels (e.g., EM I, EM II, EM III), and then the market ranges could be something like $300K to $500K which is attached to X specific requirements, level II could be $500K to $700K for Y requirements, etc...
Regardless, if you get an interview at Netflix and they ask what your comp requirements are, I think a good way to answer that question is... "fortunately, I'm in a position in my career where I really don't need a penny over $900K."
Now, let’s get to the Jobs of the Week…
This week, we feature a selection of AI/ML jobs in education. Spoiler alert: none of the ranges below touch the $900K mark, but I’m pretty confident most mortals will be able to make a living off of them.
