ETCH Jobs of the Week (JOTW) is a collaboration between ETCH, your home for EdTech news and information; and my recruiting practice, Tenzing, which helps orgs positively impacting education efficiently attract, source, vet and hire mission-aligned talent.
We’ll now be consistently posting and emailing ETCH JOTW here on Fridays.
With Shaq being featured at StartEd’s EdTech Week and making the news for his foray into EdTech by investing Edsoma, combined with NBA preseason kicking off; I’m excited to present the NBA-themed edition of Jobs of the Week.
Shaq, who earned his MBA in 2005, says he did it for the children who look up to him to help them understand the importance of education. He believes that literacy can drive positive change, not only for children, but also for vulnerable populations like folks who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated.
Shaq is just one of an increasing number of current and former NBA players investing in brighter futures within their hometowns and causes they believe in. Kevin Durant partnered with College Track to open up the Durant Center in his home county, Prince George’s County, MD. This was College Track’s first center on the East Coast and has since expanded to Southeast D.C. The program helps teens from disadvantaged communities attend and graduate from college.
Durant’s former teammate, Steph Curry, and his wife, Ayesha Curry, have been consistently investing in the children’s wellbeing through their Eat.Learn.Play Foundation. This September they committed to invest an additional $50 million in nutritious meals, reading programs, schoolyards, and youth sports within Oakland public schools. Additionally, Curry has been on a mission to increase access to golf, often known as the sport of business, for underserved communities through Underrated Golf and in 2019 funded the launch of Howard University’s Division I golf team.
Much of the education work we’ve seen from NBA stars is philanthropic, but some are also impacting the space through venture investing too. This week, we’ve curated a selection of jobs from EdTech organizations backed by current and former NBA players.
Now, let’s get to the Jobs of the Week…
