ETCH Jobs of the Week (JOTW) is a collaboration between ETCH, your home for EdTech news and information; and my recruiting practice, Tenzing, which helps orgs positively impacting education efficiently attract, source, vet and hire mission-aligned talent.
Holiday schedule: We will publish the next two Fridays (12/8 and 12/15) before taking an end-of-year break. Feel free to respond to this note if you’d like to see your job featured in one of our next newsletters.
You may have heard that OpenAI had quite a November. In one 72-hour span, the company fired CEO Sam Altman and replaced him with not one, but two(!) new CEOs. The entire world was transfixed. My 4-year-old asked me if her friend ChatGPT was going to be OK.
Fortunately for all involved, I can now answer “Yes.” This weekend I look forward to sharing a new friend with her, a customized version of ChatGPT called Resume Matcher!
Meet Resume Matcher.
Resume Matcher took about an hour of blood, sweat, and tears to create. These secretions were mainly from the CrossFit WOD I was wrapping up; OpenAI’s design prompts made the process easy enough to do in between HIIT cycles.
Resume Matcher is designed to help job seekers see how well their resumes match a job posting they are really really really interested in.
Like any good mad scientist, I tried it out on myself first.
To start, I went and found a job listing on Google Jobs that was directionally - but not totally - aligned with my skillset and work experience, which I copied and pasted into Resume Matcher.
Then, I took an old copy of my resume to put Resume Matcher to the test:
Resume Matcher’s output was, frankly, impressive. Among other things, the output:
Explicitly spelled out the key points of alignment between my resume and the JD
Highlighted areas where I could improve to be more competitive for the role, such as emphasizing cross-functional collaboration with different stakeholders mentioned in the JD.
Provided the following Overall Assessment:
“Your resume strongly aligns with the requirements for the Associate Director of Talent Acquisition role. Your extensive experience in talent acquisition, strategy implementation, and ATS systems, along with your leadership and team management skills, are particularly relevant. To further strengthen your application, you may want to highlight experiences that demonstrate collaboration across various teams and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
You can see the whole chat thread here.
This result is pretty good for a non-technical person’s first attempt at customizing a GPT! Resume Matcher is not yet able to understand that I might be a bit overqualified for the role, but it is consistent with the type of specific feedback I would give a job candidate in a first conversation (and also aligned with the career-centric ChatGPT prompts I’ve been honing for the past 6 months).
A few of the reasons I like it:
It quickly reveals blind spots: the job search is exhausting. It is easy to forget to mention skills or experiences you have that are relevant to a specific job, as well as revealing areas that you may need to gain more experience or new skills for a particular job.
It expedites tailoring drafts of resumes, cover letters, and outreach messages around specific opportunities.
It empowers candidates with a new way to look at their resumes and supporting career collateral, as well as acts as an interactive career assistant.
Give Resume Matcher a try, and let me know what you think. I can continue to tweak the configuration of GPT, so let’s see what we can do together. ;-)
Note: Unfortunately, you will need GPT Plus to use Resume Matcher. This is an OpenAI policy, I hope to make Resume Matcher more broadly accessible in the future.
