ETCH Jobs of the Week (JOTW) is a collaboration between ETCH, your home for EdTech news and information; and my recruiting practice, Tenzing, which helps orgs positively impacting education efficiently attract, source, vet and hire mission-aligned talent.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but there are other people out there who curate excellent jobs lists. One of these people is Jenna Garchar, Sr. Regional Director of Partnerships at Civitas Learning. Jenna posts hers on LinkedIn every Thursday; I highly recommend following her if you are in the market for remote jobs in higher education and social impact.
For this edition of Jobs of the Week, I interviewed Jenna about her journey from teaching in South Korea to making a mark in Higher EdTech. She also provides some sage advice for job seekers! Plus, there are some lessons for employers in how to attract and retain talented individuals like Jenna.
Lastly, the jobs in this edition of Jobs of the Week come from… you guessed it, Jenna! Thank you Jenna!
Interview with Jenna: Navigating Higher EdTech
How’d you break into Higher EdTech from teaching in S. Korea?
After graduating from Ohio University I knew I wanted to work in Study Abroad, so I found an opportunity to teach in South Korea to gain some international experience. This led to my dream job; leading a team that partnered with universities across the U.S. on custom faculty-led study abroad programs.
One of the schools we partnered with was Northeastern University. I was offered a position to lead a Program Development team in the Global Experience Office, which I very much enjoyed for three-and-a-half years. But after some leadership changes and decisions that left me feeling underpaid and underappreciated, I quit.
I leaned on my Linkedin network, did an “open for work” post, and then my network went to work for me. Before I knew it, I got referred to my current position by my best friend’s boyfriend’s friend who had just started a job at Civitas Learning. They were looking for someone with higher ed experience to join their business development team. It was a natural fit :)
What are the big differences you’ve seen between working in a higher ed institution vs. working for an org selling into higher ed?
I started my career working for an organization selling into higher ed, then directly in higher ed, and now back again. The starkest contrast is the higher compensation outside of higher ed. That’s the reality of it, and I wish it wasn’t the case! Student-facing roles in higher education require more emotional labor output, and often work a OT and weekends for less money.
Higher ed tends to be more formal with hierarchical and scholarly communication styles, which can lead to slower decision-making and a need for more nuanced approaches to influencing stakeholders.
Beyond that there aren’t a ton of differences that aren’t dependent on management styles and team dynamics. You have good leaders and bad leaders in both types of organizations.
What are the problems or big questions you’re helping higher ed institutions answer at Civitas Learning?
Civitas Learning is a data analytics company that partners with institutions to transform (and unify) their student data to help students succeed.
Our analytics inform decisions on student advising, student success initiatives, course offerings, scheduling, and more, tailored to each institution's needs.
Some questions we help institutions answer:
How can we integrate our data and systems to have a single source of truth?
What student success initiatives are actually moving the needle on persistence, and for whom?
How can we become more efficient AND more impactful?
How can we proactively reach struggling students? How can we know how students are doing - beyond mid-term grades and faculty “early” alerts?
What courses do students plan to take, and what times work best for them?
Do we need to open up additional sections of these courses?
…and much more! Analytics are there to drive informed decision-making on questions that are unique to specific institutions.
What trends are you most excited about?
I’m most excited about how remote degrees will intersect with global degrees. In this post-COVID era, online degrees remain popular, but people still crave in-person experiences and community, too. There’s a lot of opportunities for impactful global programming both online and in-person.
I’m also really excited about generative AI and education. AI is making teaching and learning much more efficient, so we can spend more time actively collaborating to solve some really difficult societal issues. The best professors are great at facilitating these types of projects.
How’d you get into compiling remote higher ed & social impact jobs?
After quitting my job because they “couldn’t guarantee” that I could remain working remotely after 2 years of doing so successfully, I landed a remote job that paid almost double what I had been making. I had a newborn and was feeling especially grateful for remote work and was eager to give back.
I was inspired by other people on Linkedin posting job lists (Sara Dart for Study Abroad jobs, and Josh Czupryk for K-12 jobs, for example). I began sharing job listings to support others, focusing on remote opportunities in higher ed and social impact, always with transparent salary ranges to promote equity.
Now, I dedicate about 5 hours per week on LinkedIn and additional time on job boards like Higher Ed Jobs and Idealist, filtering for remote positions with listed salaries.
What advice do you have for those trying to break into Higher EdTech?
Be proactive in looking for opportunities to lead tech-related projects at work to gain more IT-related skills.
Ask for LinkedIn recommendations from current and past colleagues. Then network, network, network. Don’t be afraid to slide into someone’s LinkedIn DMs1
Rework your resume so that it is concise and focuses on results.
Recognize that you might have to start at a more entry-level position to get your foot in the door at a tech company.
