ETCH Jobs of the Week (JOTW) is a collaboration between ETCH, your home for EdTech news and information; and my recruiting practice, Tenzing, which helps orgs positively impacting education efficiently attract, source, vet and hire mission-aligned talent.
Each year, Technically Media kicks off May with Philly Tech Week (PTW). During PTW, I often lead the resume review session for job seekers attending their NET/WORK tech jobs fair. Last year, we did ChatGPT-driven resume reviews with a line out the door. This year, sensing some AI fatigue, I went low-fi with a table, chairs, pen, tabletop sign, and my eagerness and expertise. The line was still out the door, and I couldn't get to everyone, even after four hours of 10-minute sessions. Reflecting on my half-day of HIIT career counseling, here are some observations and advice I found myself repeating:
Develop a master resume
Create a master resume that is a library of every accomplishment and project breakdown organized under each professional experience. Think of it as a very long, totally exhaustive resume - intentionally longer than anything you would ever submit. When you find a top position of interest, draw from this master resume to pull out the most relevant text snippets, accomplishments, and project details. Expand on the most relevant experience and condense or eliminate the least relevant experience.
Tailor, tailor, tailor
Many job seekers asked, “Why aren’t I hearing back from employers?” Sometimes it was obvious—format issues, missing details, or lack of relevant experience. But for most professionals, my follow-up questions were about the types of jobs they were applying to, followed by a deep dive into tailoring their resumes for those jobs. I advise developing at least two to three versions of your resume for the different types of positions you’re pursuing. And then draw from the “master resume” to further customize for specific job applications.
Tailoring is more than keyword matching
Most job seekers said, “Yeah, I try to make sure I have the right keywords.” However, personalizing resumes for specific job openings involves more substantive changes.
Yes, run your resume through ChatGPT
ChatGPT will surprise you at how helpful it can be for further personalization, but, please, no blind copying and pasting! Check out how I recommend utilizing my Resume Matcher GPT here, which is now available for free with OpenAI’s recent updates, see Claire Zau’s analysis here.

Relationships > resumes
While the focus of this newsletter is on resumes, I still spent time with attendees on how to develop relationships with hiring managers, recruiters, and potential peers within target organizations. I shared this link to resources and encouraged them to connect with me on LinkedIn, emphasizing my willingness to make introductions.
Only one person connected with me, which may say more about the impression I left, but it also suggests that we often default to prioritizing resume hacks over intentional relationship-building.
